Following the NZ/UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which was a significant win for Māori, Te Taumata will continue to improve market access and opportunities for our people in other prominent markets.
The FTA currently being negotiated with the European Union (EU) is a prime example of how Te Taumata utilises our team’s diverse experience and knowledge to secure better results for Māori exporters.
Meet the team
Peter Rice (Ngati Whakaue, Ngati Whaoa)
Peter is a policy advisor on industrial strategy, productive investment, innovation and the financial system (UK Shadow Chancellor 2017-2020), and has been an advisor to a number of multi-national corporations on international finance. His area of expertise is in financial system and development economics.
Dr Richard Meade
Richard helped Te Taumata identify Māori interests, issues and opportunities associated with the NZ/UK FTA. His areas of expertise include competition and regulatory economics, environmental economics, institutional economics (including economics of governance, ownership and incentives), market and non-market valuation techniques, historical loss valuation (commercial and cultural), futures analysis.
Lynell Tuffrey-Huria (Ngāti Ruanui, Ngāruahine, Ngā Rauru)
Lynell is the first Māori Patent Attorney and has specialised in all aspects of trademark protection, management and enforcement in New Zealand and overseas. Lynell is regarded as one of New Zealand leading experts on indigenous intellectual property law in New Zealand and the Pacific. She specialises in advising Māori organisations on IP issues and is passionate about helping Māori to navigate the IP system.
Hone McGregor (Te Whānau-ā-Apanui, Te Ātiawa, Te Atihaunui-a-Pāpārangi, Ngāti Kahungunu/Ngāti Kere, Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga, Rārua, Rangitāne, Ngāti Kuia)
Hone is a member of the Te Taumata Māori trade policy group, Trade For All Ministerial Advisory Board, Federation of Māori Authorities and Tapa Tahi Māori Intellectual Property rōpū. He is also the Chair of Our Land & Water National Science Challenge and Volunteer Service Abroad (VSA). He is the Director of Wakatū Incorporation and Kono LLP Māori Exporter. He specialises in trade policy and advocacy, Māori enterprise, conservation and environmental advocacy, training and education (social infrastructure consulting), and NGOs.
Dr Penelope Gibson
Penelope’s expertise is in the management of innovation, intellectual property, investment and international commercialisation. Recognised as one of the world’s top advisors, Penelope actively works with Te Taumata to ensure the rights of the group and Mātauranga Māori are being respected, appropriately acknowledged and protected.
John Ballingall
John has advised public sector, private sector and industry body clients on trade policy issues for more than 25 years. He currently works at Sense Partners and is on the NZ Winegrowers Board. John has advised the APEC Secretariat on non-tariff measures and trade policy related to COVID, delivered a report on progress on the Bogor Goals, and presented at APEC meetings around the world. He has represented NZ at OECD meetings on trade and led NZ government teams working on COVID-19 emergency fiscal support to the Pacific, and international climate finance.
With a number of key trade relationships being negotiated this year, Te Taumata has the benefit of a strong team working to achieve better outcomes for all Māori.
